How to teach subtraction word problems effectively

Combining real-world situations with numbers can be distracting and make solving problems difficult for many students. Getting over that initial hurdle is difficult, and simply reading word problems and trying to solve them may not always lead to positive results.

Luckily, there are techniques you can use as a parent or educator to make solving word problems easier.

Using visual aids and manipulatives

When looking at words is not enough, try using counters, number lines, dice, color cubes, snap cubes, an abacus, or any other physical representations to visualize the word problem. If you don’t have tools handy, try drawing pictures!

Encouraging math talk and reasoning

Word problems come in many sizes. Some are short and sweet, and some are long and complex! Longer problems tend to offer unnecessary information, challenging students to determine which information is important and overlook the information that isn’t.

Read the following word problems carefully! Focus on the essential information and ignore everything else.

1. Pierce goes fishing every morning at 6:00 a.m. He wishes he could fish for 10 hours a day. However, Pierce has to leave by 11:00 a.m. for lunch. By the time Pierce leaves, how many hours in total did he actually end up fishing?

2. Mr. Fredrickson is surveying his 1st grade class of 20 students to find out what ice cream flavors his students like the most. He finds out that 11 of his students prefer chocolate ice cream, 5 students prefer vanilla, and 4 students prefer strawberry. How many more students in the class prefer chocolate over strawberry?

3. You are filling a fruit bowl with peaches. Each peach is about 4 inches tall and the bowl is about 7 inches tall. You have a total of 13 peaches, but only 8 peaches seem to fit in the bowl. When the bowl is full, how many peaches are left?

4. Miguel and his dad are trying to catch the bus. They have to be at a show by 4:55 p.m. that night and must catch the 4:15 p.m. bus. Miguel and his dad show up at the bus stop 8 minutes early. At what time do Miguel and his dad get to the bus stop?

5. Arnie’s house is 6 blocks away from his school. After school, it takes Arnie 18 minutes to walk home. Yesterday, Arnie discovered a shortcut! If he uses his shortcut, his house is only 5 blocks away and it takes him 3 minutes less to get home. How many minutes in total does it take Arnie to get home from school using his shortcut?

6. Aunt June has 14 apps on her phone. She realizes that she doesn’t use most of them and wants to delete some. Her goal is to have less than 8 total apps on her phone. So, Aunt June goes through her apps and deletes 9 in total. Did Aunt June achieve her goal?

7. You are trying to hang up a framed photo in your room. The framed photo is 6 inches tall and 8 inches wide. You want to hang the framed photo exactly 15 inches away from your window. However, when you finish hanging the framed photo, you realize you hung it 4 inches closer to the window than you originally intended. How many inches away from the window is the framed photo?

8. Claud is teaching an art class at 5:00 p.m. A total of 6 of his students are early, 8 are on time, and 2 are late. If a total of 20 students signed up for his class and only 16 students showed up, how many students never came?

9. Miles and Jonas are playing catch with a baseball. They are counting how many times they throw the ball and how many times they drop it. Miles threw the ball a total of 25 times and dropped it a total of 9 times. Jonas threw the ball a total of 26 times and dropped it only 2 times. How many more times did Miles drop the ball than Jonas?

In addition to helping your child prepare for the social, emotional, and behavioral expectations of 1st grade, it’s a great idea to practice academic skills like basic addition and subtraction, identifying sight words, and recognizing shapes. Even if they grasped these concepts in kindergarten, refreshing their skills during the summer will help them start the year strong.

1st grade literacy skills

Story Elements, Structure, and Characteristics: 1st graders should be able to understand basic story elements like plot, characters, setting, and conflict. They should be able to retell a simple story and make predictions.. In 1st grade, students learn the characteristics of fables, myths, and legends. Parents can help develop these habits by reading aloud daily–even 10-15 minutes makes a difference. Let’s talk about what you can expect on the first day of 1st grade and how you can prepare yourself and your child for what comes next.

What to Expect on the First Day of First Grade

Every classroom is different, so there are many ways the first day of 1st grade can go.

However, simply preparing students to face the unknown with excitement can relieve them of their first-day jitters and motivate them to go to school feeling ready to learn.

Be excited! Your excitement will rub off on your child, leaving little room for anxiety.

Usually, the day begins with the teacher introducing themselves and any classroom helpers they may have. The students may be asked to introduce themselves as well. This may be done through a simple “My name is…” introduction in front of the class, or through a more creative project designed by the teacher.

Prepare a quick and fun way for your child to introduce themselves on the first day!

Before any content can be taught, the teacher will also likely give students their seating arrangements and cubby assignments. This gives students the chance to unpack their school supplies and decorate their special spots.

The rest of the day will likely be spent teaching students about the classroom rules and routines, assigning classroom chores, giving the students a tour of the school, or other introductory activities.

Getting your child ready in the morning

Along with teaching your child to complete household chores when asked, your child should also maintain a productive morning routine.

Children will need to be able to get themselves up and out the door early in the morning for the rest of their lives, so developing the right habits early on can set them up for a lifetime of good mornings.

And, to make your own life easier, teach them to get ready in the morning without your help.

The more independent they are in the mornings, the easier it will be to get them to school on time. And on the first day of 1st grade, you definitely don’t want to be late!

Having an easy drop-off

Children often deal with separation anxiety, meaning dropping a child off at school, especially on the first day, can lead to tantrums and crying.

To prevent this, practice goodbyes with your child on the days leading up to 1st grade. Creating a goodbye routine can make school drop-offs easy. And remember to keep it brief!

The best goodbye is a quick hug, kiss, and wave. Children may be upset when their parent or guardian walks away, but once they start classroom activities, they’ll forget you were ever there.

Practice saying simple goodbyes beforehand.

Another cause of difficult drop-offs is simply the discomfort of being in a new place. So, familiarize your child with the school. Take them to the school building before the first day and tell them as much as you can about it.

The following fun math activities for 1st grade are low-prep, hands on, and super engaging for students. When my own children were in 1st grade, they enjoyed all of these activities both in their classroom and at home. Plus, many of these activities can also be easily adapted to suit different learning styles and abilities. Let’s get started!

Greater than, less than, equal to?

This simple dice game is easy to prepare and perfect for transitions or when you have a bit of leftover time after the math lesson.

You’ll need:

Dice (two per pair of students)

Paper, pencil, markers, or crayons

Working in pairs, students each roll one die and draw the number of dots on their paper. They then compare their dots with their partner’s and circle the larger number. Students learning greater than, less than, or equal to symbols can practice drawing those as well, so you may want a visual aid reminder. Students should play as many rounds of this game as time allows. Make it extra fun by providing small whiteboards and colorful dry erase markers!

Marshmallow shape building

In 1st grade geometry, students learn how to identify 2 and 3d shapes correctly. This fun (and tasty!) activity will help make the abstract concept of shapes easier to understand. Physically manipulating the marshmallows and toothpicks helps develop spatial awareness.

You’ll need:

Toothpicks

Mini marshmallows

Shape visual aid

Talk as a whole class about the shapes they’ve learned while drawing the shapes on the board or large piece of paper. Then give students a printout (example shown below) to use as a visual guide for their building.

First graders will then form shapes using marshmallows and toothpicks. When completed, talk about the number of sides and vertices on each shape. After students can build 2D shapes, work on creating 3D shapes, such as cones, cubes, or pyramids.

I recommend including a few extra marshmallows for a special sweet treat–they’ll definitely ask if they can eat a few!

PencilsThis is a great activity for the beginning of the school year. Have each student write their first name on a strip of paper. If needed, provide strips with boxes to guide letter placement. Working as a group, arrange and glue the strips of paper on a large poster board ordering them from shortest name to longest name. For example, the chart might begin with “Amy” (3 letters) and end with Christopher (10 letters). If students are ready, extend the activity by identifying the most common name length among the students. For homeschool parents with a small group, use the names of friends or family members to create your list!

“Beary” fun addition/subtraction grab bags

Many young children benefit from using math manipulatives (physical objects) to help practice addition and subtraction skills.

You’ll need:

2 small paper bags

At least 20 small objects

Paper and pencil or whiteboard and markers

For this game, place two small paper bags on a table. Choose items to use as manipulatives— small candies, LEGO bricks, or math cubes work well. My kids especially loved these colorful bears, so that’s what we used. To play, kids grab a handful of objects from each bag, count them, then add up the results. Encourage 1st graders to work slowly and carefully, writing down the number of items they take from the first bag before grabbing items from the second bag. Provide paper and pencil or a whiteboard and markers for them to practice writing equations and finding the sum. This one can be easily adapted to suit different ability levels. For example, if your first grader is working on adding or subtracting numbers within ten, make sure there are no more than ten small objects in each bag. As their skills progress, add more!
